Arrived!

Hi, everyone,

We all arrived safe and sound to Kobe on Friday evening.  Eight of our students flew from Phoenix Thursday am, and the other 10 already were in Asia. (including 3 who climbed Mt. Fuji!)

We all met up either at the airport in Osaka or at the hotel in Kobe.  The flight on Japan Airlines (JAL)  from LAX to Osaka was about 11 hours and uneventful. Upon landing a couple of the students were told their bags may not have arrived which created a little anxiety but as it turned out they were all there.  We breezed through immigration and customs, and Dr. Nakagawa was waiting for us at the arrival gate. We took the Bay Shuttle ferry to Kobe Airport that cuts across Osaka Bay and takes 30 minutes (by train or bus it takes over an hour since you have to go around the bay).  From Kobe Airport we took a 7 minute ride the Port Liner train, then walked to the hotel.  I think everyone who traveled from the US that day was pretty tired and glad to get to the hotel  and crash.
From LAX to KIX

In an hour we will be going to Kobe Gakuin University (KGU) to meet the Dean, faculty and some students, and then they will have a welcome BBQ for us.  Tonight we are lucky to be here for the Kobe Port fireworks (hanabi) festival (https://kobehanabi.jp/), and we will have a bayside view from KGU.

Every day will be busy, but I know the 18 UA students will have a memorable experience in Japan.
